Weaver Secures the Ends of the Rug

All     Previous    Next
A weaver secures the ends working from the back side of the rug.
Here a weaver secures the warp yarns by hand with special, tiny stitches. The ends of the warp yarns that wrap around the loom form the fringes of the rug when it is cut from the loom. The top and bottom sides of an Oriental rug, where the fringes are, are called the "ends" of the rug. The left and right sides of the rug are called the selvages or simply the "sides" or "edges".
