  About Richard Rothstein & Co.

Richard RothsteinRichard Rothstein & Co. is owned, not surprisingly, by me Richard.
I specialize in new and antique museum-quality Oriental rugs (no one else does both), custom Oriental rugs, hooked rugs, and high-end home furnishings.

For antique Oriental rugs, our focus is in Northwest Persian Rugs (Heriz, Tabriz, Serapi, and Bakhshaish), and our customers tell us we have the largest selection available anywhere, and we likely do.

We also have an extensive collection of Central/Western Persian rugs (Bidjar, Feraghan, Malayer, Sultanabad, etc.) and Caucasian rugs.  In 2013, we will be launching CaucasianRugs.com, a site devoted solely to Caucasian rugs.

Our main location is in Mount Laurel, New Jersey.  (See a brief VIDEO TOUR of our showroom narrated by nationally recognized Oriental Rug expert, Barry O'Connell.)

For new Oriental rugs, we only sell rugs that are exclusive to us, made in Azerbaijan or Turkey--not China, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, or elsewehere.  These are not rugs sold in "rug stores."  These are documented historic designs with all-natural dyes and hand-spun wool, woven by master adult-women weavers.  These rugs are so close to the originals that we are the only dealer ever allowed to advertise new Oriental rugs in The Magazine Antiques (where we were on the back cover) and Antiques & Fine Art.  Here's a short movie (4 min.) I shot of our rugs being woven in Baku.

For custom Oriental rugs, we do what no one else can do; faithfully recreate any rug in any size, to museum standards.  Our clients include rug collectors, rug scholars, designers, architects, and institutions.  In fact, we were recently selected by The National Park Service to recreate rugs for their historic properties, and we are currently working with the Isabella Steward Gardner Museum in Boston to recreate a 16th century Isfahan from their collections.  Later this year we will be launching CustomOrientalRugs.com.

For hooked rugs, we offer hundreds of designs in countless sizes.  Again, all historic designs, all entirely handmade.  Later this year we will be launching HookedRugs.com.

As concerns furnishings, our mirrors, furniture, bouillotte lamps, and more, are all handmade and exclusive to us.

We have a 5,000 s.f. showroom in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and we also showcase our rugs at the Arader Galleries in New York.  (See the contact us section for more details.)  We sell retail and to the trade.

I am the fourth generation in the home furnishings industry but the first generation in the Oriental rug business.  I was raised in a family of antique rug collectors--not dealers--and I did not inherit this business.  I chose this business because I have had a lifelong love affair with rugs.

In addition to rugs, my family also collected American antiques, needlework, paintings, prints, lighting, and the related decorative arts; hence, my passion for everything I sell--not just rugs.

Personally, I was raised in Lexington, Mass., graduated from The University of Pennsylvania, and married up to the woman of my dreams.  I have three precious kids who are better than I am at everything, and one crazy dog that doesn't know she's a dog.  I'm lucky for what I have, and lucky for what I do.  I love what I do (most days) and I do what I love.

Still, if you want to know more about me, or what I sell or what I do, call or send me an email, (or better come visit), or google me, or feel free to read what's already been written about me and my business in numerous magazines and publications.
